History and Architecture

History

The origins of the Svetitskhoveli Monastery go back to the 4th century, when it was built as a small wooden chapel under King Mirian III. According to Georgian tradition, Saint Nino, who Christianised the country, chose this place for the first church in Georgia.

The present-day Cathedral was built between 1010 and 1029 by the architect Arsukidze at the invitation of Catholicos Melchizedek I of Georgia. The then King of Georgia was Giorgi I (George I).

Over the centuries, the cathedral was damaged by conquests, earthquakes and other disasters, but it was always restored. A remarkable reconstruction took place at the end of the 14th century after its destruction by Tamerlane. The next major renovation took place at the beginning of the 15th century, with the construction of the present dome, in the middle of the 17th century.

The important relic, the robe of Christ, the country’s greatest shrine, is kept here, making the cathedral one of the most important pilgrimage destinations for Georgian Orthodoxy.

Architecture

The architecture of the Svetitskhoveli Monastery  is an excellent example of the cross-domed style that originated in Georgia in the early Middle Ages. It impresses with its imposing dimensions and harmonious design, which gives it unique acoustics. Although the cathedral has been rebuilt several times, the original architectural elements, such as the beautiful round-arched windows and the richly decorated facades, are still visible.

The decoration of the walls and windows shows complex patterns and ornaments that are typical of Georgian church architecture. Particularly noteworthy are the well-preserved blind arcades that give the façades a graceful movement. Also of interest are the ox heads at the entrance as a sign of the old religion and the swastikas as a symbol of the sun, which were widespread in the Caucasus before Christianity.
