Overview

The two-day tour to Vardzia in southern Georgia includes exploring the two South Georgian regions of Samtskhe and Javakheti. This region is not only impressive for its historical monuments and attractions, but also for its breathtaking scenery.

Located in the mountainous Lesser Caucasus, the region is characterised by numerous mountain lakes. It is also home to the Javakheti National Park, a popular destination for birdwatchers and nature photographers.

Please note: This trip can also be booked as an individual or self-drive trip.

Itinerary

Day 1.Tbilisi – Zalka – Wardzia

On the drive from Tbilisi to Vardzia via Tsalka, we have the opportunity to admire the unique landscape of the Lesser Caucasus. On the way to Vardzia, we make a short detour to Tsalka, where we can visit the village of Trialeti, which used to be inhabited by Swabians.

Travelling through this region, we will have an opportunity to enjoy the beauty of mountain lakes on the plateau of the Lesser Caucasus, including Paravani and Sagamo lakes. This picturesque landscape is a popular destination for cycling tours in Georgia.

During the day, we will have the opportunity to visit some interesting sites, including the Javakheti National Park, which is very popular with birdwatchers and nature photographers, the 17th-century Khertvisi Fortress and the ruins of the 12th-century Tmogvi Castle.

Tag 2.Vardzia – Borjomi – Tbilisi

After breakfast and a visit to the impressive rock city of Vardzia, we will continue through the picturesque Kura Gorge. On the way, we will stop at the fascinating village of Saro, with its old castle ruins from the Bronze Age and well-preserved old houses, also known as ‘Meskhuri Darbazi’.

We will have a break in Akhaltsikhe, have a snack and visit the imposing Rabati Mosque in the Rabati castle. On the way back, we will pass through Borjomi, where we will taste the famous mineral water of the region and take a relaxing stroll in the park. In the evening, we will return to Tbilisi and end our tour to Vardzia.
