Cycling Holiday in Georgia

The route is mostly flat and pleasant to cycle, with only occasional small inclines. We pass the village of Ianeti and reach the village of Didi Jikhaishi, where we can visit the house-museum of an important Georgian personality, Niko Nikoladze.

Our destination today is a charming town with an interesting monastery from the 13th to 14th century. The monastery is located on a hill in the centre of the city. Since the road is quite steep, you can take a taxi or take the cable car up.

In this area there is also a very famous gorge, which is ideal for a ride in an inflatable boat.

Cycling route:

The route from Martvili to Zalendzhikha runs along the picturesque Egrisi Mountains. Our first destination today is the small village of Salchino, which was chosen as a summer residence by the Megrelian princes Dadiani because of its natural beauty. They had a palace built here with a beautiful garden.

After visiting the palace of Salchino, we continue through typical Megrelian villages. After crossing the Techuri River and passing through the villages of Taia, Mukhuri and Jgali, we finally reach the small town of Zalenjicha.

In the evening, there is an opportunity to visit the impressive cathedral with its unique wall paintings.

Cycling route:

Zugdidi is the largest city in the region and the route from Tsalenjdschicha to Zugdidi is a very beautiful and interesting one. It offers breathtaking views of the Kolchis plain and the surrounding villages.

On the way, you will come across a tea plantation from the Soviet era. This plantation, set against a mountainous backdrop, provides excellent photo opportunities. In Zugdidi, you should visit the main palace of the Dadiani family (the princely family of Samegrelo), which is located next to the beautiful Zugdidi Botanical Garden. Such visits make our cycling holiday in Georgia even more interesting.

Today’s destination is Chkhorostku, and on the way there you will have the opportunity to visit the old fortress of Jikhaskari. The fortress is located on a hill and is difficult to reach by bike. It takes about 30 minutes to walk there (one way).

Cycling route:

Today’s route is a little flatter and less strenuous. After a few small ascents and descents, you will reach the small town of Senaki in 2-3 hours. Here, on the Tekhuri River, is an impressive fortress from Roman times called Tsikhegodji.

The fortress is characterised by its unique architecture and has a tunnel to the Tekhuri River, which makes it particularly interesting and worth seeing. There is also a beautiful thermal spring near the fortress called ‘Dedamoka’, which we will visit at the end of our trip.

The cycling holiday in Georgia ends with the journey to Zamtredia, which leads along the flat plain. Here the landscape, with its flat areas and slow-flowing rivers, is typical of the Kolkhi plain.

Our route takes us to the village of Meore Ontopo, from where we continue to the village of Gezati and finally to Samtredia via the villages of Kolobani, Marantschala and Marani, where our round trip in Samegrelo ends. After a short transfer, we return to Kutaisi, where we spend the night.
