FAQs about self-drive tours in Georgia

Question 1.What are the road conditions like in Georgia, especially in the mountains?

The main roads are generally well maintained. Side roads and mountain passes, such as those leading to Ushguli, can be challenging and sometimes require four-wheel drive and caution. Allow plenty of time.

Question 2.Do I need a navigation device, or is my smartphone sufficient?

A smartphone with a good offline map app (e.g., Google Maps, Maps.me) is usually sufficient. Download the maps in advance, as network coverage may vary.

Question 3.Which type of rental car is recommended for this self-drive trip?

An SUV or a vehicle with higher ground clearance (ideally 4×4/all-wheel drive) is highly recommended, especially for the sections of the route in the Caucasus (e.g., to Ushguli) and unpaved roads.

Question 4.Can I get by with English, or do I need Georgian/Russian?

In Tbilisi and tourist centers, you can get by well with English. In rural areas, a basic knowledge of Russian or Georgian, or a translation app, is very helpful.

Question 5.Is it safe to drive and park in Georgia?

Yes, Georgia is considered a safe travel destination. Be careful in traffic, which can be quite lively at times. Use guarded parking lots or hotel parking lots at night, especially in cities.
