Overview

Our 10-day trekking in Tusheti is an exceptional offer for those who are looking for trekking in Georgia and are able to cover daily distances of 13 to 17 km and altitude differences of 500 to 900 m.

Tusheti, a mountainous region in eastern Georgia in the Greater Caucasus, attracts many travellers who want to explore the unique landscape and diverse flora and fauna of the Caucasus. A national park was established here as early as 2003 to protect the unique beauty of this region. Even the journey to Tusheti via the 3000-metre-high Abano Pass, which is crossed in an off-road vehicle, is an adventure.

During the trek through Tusheti, we explore all four valleys of the region and visit the picturesque villages. A baggage car helps us to transport our luggage to the next accommodation, so that the hikers only have to carry a daypack.

During the trekking in Tusheti, we spend the night in the guesthouses of the Tushetian villages, where delicious meals and hot showers await us every day. Guests will have the opportunity to experience the daily life of the Tushetians and visit famous Tushetian defensive towers. Our guide will tell us a lot about Tushetian culture and local customs.

Itinerary

Day 1.Tbilisi - Omalo | Driving over Abano Pass

Our trekking in Tusheti begins with an exciting drive to Omalo. The route from Tbilisi to Omalo in Tusheti is incredibly scenic, and we can take several breaks at selected locations along the way to enjoy the beauty of the surroundings.

The highlight of the day is crossing the Abano Pass in the Greater Caucasus Mountains, which lies at an altitude of approximately 3,000 meters and offers breathtaking panoramic views. We will arrive at our accommodation in the village of Omalo in the late afternoon.

Day 2.Omalo - Dartlo | Acclimatization

Our first hiking stage is somewhat easier and also serves as an acclimatization hike. Although the route largely follows a well-maintained path, it is very varied and pleasant. Today’s destination is the village of Dartlo, a typical and well-preserved settlement with traditional Tusheti architecture, which is well worth a visit.

Day 3.Dartlo - Girevi | Hiking along the Alazani River

Besides Dartlo, there are other beautiful, typically Caucasian villages like Chescho, Farsma, and Girevi that we shouldn’t miss on our hiking trip through Tusheti.

Our destination today is the next village at the end of the valley – Girevi. There, we’ll prepare for crossing the Nakaicho Pass.

Depending on our mood, we can also visit a small village above Dartlo – Kvavlo – and then continue hiking to the village.

Day 4.Girevi - Jvarboseli | Crossing of Nakaicho Pass

Today’s stage is the highlight of our trekking in Tusheti. Our route takes us over the Nakaicho Pass (2,900 m), nestled between the Pirikita and Gomezari valleys, a popular destination for hikers.

Beautiful flower meadows, babbling mountain streams, and breathtaking views of the valleys make this day’s hike an unforgettable experience. Our destination is the charming village of Jwarboseli on the banks of the Pirikita Alazani River, where we will spend the night in a cozy family-run hotel.

Day 5.Jvarboseli - Goglurta | Mystical village on the ridge

Today we leave the beautiful village of Dschwarboseli and hike through other equally charming villages in the valley. After the challenging pass crossing, today’s route is shorter. Our destinations are the villages of Bukhurta, Vestomta, and Goglurta.

Day 6.Goglurta - Omalo | on the Range Makratela

A beautiful day of hiking awaits us today on our trekking tour in Tusheti, along the ridge of the Makratela Pass. After a short transfer to the village of Dochu, we’ll hike along the ridge, enjoying magnificent views.

The trail then leads us up to the crest of the Makratela Pass. We’ll hike along the ridge to Mirgvela Camp and on to Omalo.

Day 7.Resting day

After the somewhat challenging pass crossing on our trekking in Tusheti, we will treat ourselves to a day of rest in Omalo.

Depending on your mood, you can take short walks in the area around the village or simply relax and recharge your batteries for the next stage.

Accommodation: Omalo / in a guesthouse

Day 8.Omalo - Oreti Lake - Omalo | Beauty of Tusheti National Park

Near Omalo lies the beautiful Lake Oreti, which is also part of Tusheti National Park. This will be the penultimate leg of our hiking tour through Tusheti.

As we hike through magnificent pine forests, we can reflect on the experiences of the past few days. We enjoy the tranquility of the lake before returning to Omalo for another night.

Bus transfer: approx. 30 min.

Day 9.Omalo - Diklo | Last stage of the Trekking

As the final leg of our Trekking in Tusheti, we’ll take the route to a remote but very beautiful village – Diklo. Along the way, we’ll pass through a small village with typical architecture – Shenako. In Diklo, we can relax and enjoy the atmosphere of the Caucasus.

Day 11.Diklo – Tbilisi | Drive to Tbilisi and end of the trip

Our wonderful trekking in Tusheti ends with the return journey over the Abano Pass to Tbilisi.

Accommodation: Tbilisi / in a hotel

Travel packing list

Equipment & Clothing – hiking poles, sunglasses, sun hat, small daypack, 1/1.5 litre water bottle, sweets for toddlers, which can often be found in the villages or inns, camera, mobile phone, charger ( Georgia uses European sockets), power bank, hiking boots with a good profile and a change of light shoes, waterproof trousers, waterproof jacket, functional clothing such as underpants, T-shirt, leggings, jumper, fleece jacket, gloves, sleeping bag.
First aid and hygiene – plasters, blister plasters and tape, headache medicine, medicine for diarrhoea, constipation, nausea, nasal spray, eye drops, insect repellent, electrolyte preparations, personal medication, sun cream.

Level of difficulty: intermediate +; suitable for experienced hikers who can hike up to 3000 m. altitude.
Duration of the trip: 8 days of hiking, 1 day of rest, 2 days of transfer to and from Svanetia.

Luggage: our main luggage is transported by our support vehicle. We only carry our day luggage.
