Travel Programme

Overview

Our 11-day trekking in Tusheti consists of 9 hiking days – plus 2 transfer days – and one rest day. The tour is aimed at experienced hikers who are able to cover distances of 13 to 17 km and altitude differences of 500 to 900 m in one day.

Tusheti, a mountainous region in eastern Georgia in the Greater Caucasus, attracts many travellers who want to explore the unique landscape and diverse flora and fauna of the Caucasus. A national park was established here as early as 2003 to protect the unique beauty of this region. Even the journey to Tusheti via the 3000-metre-high Abano Pass, which is crossed in an off-road vehicle, is an adventure.

During the trek through Tusheti, we explore all four valleys of the region and visit the picturesque villages. A baggage car helps us to transport our luggage to the next accommodation, so that the hikers only have to carry a daypack.

During the trekking in Tusheti, we spend the night in the guesthouses of the Tushetian villages, where delicious meals and hot showers await us every day. Guests will have the opportunity to experience the daily life of the Tushetians and visit famous Tushetian defensive towers. Our guide will tell us a lot about Tushetian culture and local customs.

Please note:  The trip can also be booked individually with or without a guide. Tips and pros and cons for hiking in Georgia on your own can be found here.

Day 3.Omalo – Diklo | Acclimatisation

To get used to the altitude, we will hike from Omalo to Diklo today. The route takes us through picturesque forests and over a high plateau with breathtaking views. In Shenako, we will stop to visit the local church – an architectural gem and the only still active Orthodox church in Tusheti. Interestingly, men and women have separate entrances. After that, we will continue our hike to Diklo, where we will spend the night.

Diklo is picturesquely situated at the foot of the mountain of the same name. Those who wish can take a walk to the ruins of an old fortress. This imposing structure once sat spectacularly above a gorge and was intended to protect the valley from intruders. The fortress is located exactly on the border between Georgia and Russia and dates from the 17th century.

Day 4.Diklo – Chigho – Dartlo | Gorges of Tusheti

Our destination today is Dartlo, one of the most picturesque villages in Tusheti. From Diklo, we cross a small pass and hike through dense forest down into a deep gorge.

After crossing the river, we begin the ascent, which takes us to the small village of Chigho in 1 to 2 hours. Here we will have a lunch break and the opportunity to have a coffee or other drink with a family.

Stopping at these cosy family restaurants during a hike in Tusheti offers the opportunity to come into contact with the locals and gain a deeper understanding of their culture.

From Chigho, the route continues along the Alazani River to the village of Dartlo, which is known for its beautiful defensive towers.

Our destination today is the next village at the end of the valley – Girevi. There we prepare for the crossing of the Nakaicho Pass, where we can hike to the village of Kvavlo first, depending on our preference, and enjoy the magnificent view there. We can make this decision spontaneously on the spot.
