This protected area was established in 1961 and covers an area of 10,275 hectares in the municipality of Akhmeta in Kakheti. Flora & Fauna

The forests of the Tusheti Protected Area are characterised by a high level of biodiversity and endemism. Numerous highly specialised bioecological relict species can be discovered. The subalpine spruce forests and deki complexes are not only known for their beauty, but also play an important role in avalanche prevention, frost storage and erosion control.

They are home to rare and endangered species, including the Eurasian and Caucasian lynx, which are on the IUCN Red List. Go on a journey of discovery and keep an eye out for deer, wolves, bears and a wide variety of birds, including Eurasian black vultures and golden eagles. Caucasian stone boars also live here.

Tourism

The Tusheti reserve can only be reached by 4×4. Due to the difficult route, we recommend that you organise a local driver or a taxi to get you to your destination safely. You can book a taxi in the centre of the village of Alvani – the price is by agreement.

The Tusheti reserve is a very popular destination these days and is one of the top tourist destinations in Georgia. Even the journey there is an adventure, especially the drive over the famous Abnano Pass, which is ideal for jeep tours and mountain bike tours.

Those who enjoy horse riding or hiking and take a horse riding tour or hiking holiday in Tusheti will fully enjoy the unique landscape of the Greater Caucasus. It is also worth exploring the local architecture, with its fortified towers and old houses that reflect the history and culture of the region. Don’t miss the opportunity to taste the delicious local cuisine in the charming villages.
