Historical Monuments of Mtskheta

Svetitskhoveli Cathedral

Location

Svetitskhoveli Cathedral is located in Mtskheta, the ancient capital of Georgia, at the confluence of the Kura (Mtkvari) and Aragvi rivers. Only 20 kilometers from Tbilisi, it is one of the most visited destinations in the country.

Historical overview

The cathedral was built in the 11th century (1010–1029) by King Giorgi I under the direction of the architect Arsukidze and stands on the site where, according to tradition, Christ’s robe is buried—a symbol of special holiness. For centuries, Svetitskhoveli was:

Particularly noteworthy is the relief of the hand of the architect Arsukidze, a greeting from the past. The light inside enhances the atmosphere of silence and prayer.

Frescoes

The frescoes date from the 11th to 17th centuries and depict scenes from the life of Jesus, saints, and biblical stories. Their restrained color palette and tranquil expressiveness convey inner peace and spirituality.

Particularly fascinating and unique is the fresco on the right façade, which depicts Jesus surrounded by saints, angels, and the signs of the zodiac—an extraordinary interplay of spirituality and symbolism.

Please note: On Sundays, when mass is held, the cathedral is closed to visitors from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Jvari Church

Location

Jvari Monastery is located on a rocky hill above Mtskheta and offers one of the most impressive panoramic views in Georgia – overlooking the confluence of the Aragvi and Kura rivers. Just 20 minutes from Tbilisi, it is popular with tourists and locals alike.

Historical overview

In the 6th–7th century, the monastery was built on the site where Saint Nino had erected a wooden cross as a symbol of the spread of Christianity. The Jvari Monastery quickly became an important center of pilgrimage and prayer.

Architecture

The monastery is an example of early medieval Georgian architecture in the tetraconchs style. Austere, simple forms, symmetrical composition, and harmonious integration into nature create a calm, spiritual atmosphere. Minimalist design lends the building a sense of sanctity and solemnity.

Gelati Monastery

Location

Gelati Monastery is located 10 kilometers from Kutaisi in the valley of the Chkherimela River on a mountainside surrounded by forests and tranquility. It is easily accessible by car or organized tours.

Historical overview

Founded in 1106 by King David the Builder, Gelati was home to an academy that was considered one of the most important centers of Georgian education and culture. Novices, students, and spiritual thinkers taught here. Gelati developed into a center for science and art and preserved historical, literary, and scientific works. The fresco of King David the Builder is particularly well known.

Architecture and painting

The cross-domed complex combines a church, monastery buildings, and academy into a harmonious whole. Large domes, massive walls, and symmetrical compositions characterize the building. Visitors perceive Gelati as both a spiritual and educational center.

The frescoes date mainly from the 11th–12th centuries. They depict Christian themes, saints, bishops, the fresco of King David, and an important Byzantine mosaic of the Mother of God. The detailed frescoes have a particularly spiritual effect due to their restrained color palette.

Chazhashi village in Ushguli

Location

Ushguli is located in Svaneti at an altitude of around 2,200 meters and is one of the highest permanently inhabited settlements in the world. The village is situated in a narrow, rocky valley on the Enguri River, at the foot of Georgia’s highest mountain, Shkhara.

Ushguli is a center of Svanetian culture and history. The settlement of Chazhashi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The village’s medieval defensive towers have stood for centuries as a symbol of the resilience and unity of the Svans.

Architecture

The Svaneti towers date back to the 9th–14th centuries. Each residential structure (“Lushnu Kor”) has a tall, 10–12-meter brick tower, and together they form small fortress complexes. The combination of towers gives the impression of a continuous defensive structure. The height, location, and arrangement of the towers create a unique visual experience.
