Location and Geography

The Vashlovani-National-Park in eastern Georgia, in Kakheti on the Iori Plateau, attracts many adventure seekers and nature lovers. Since its creation in 1935, the park has been a wonderful example of the unique flora and fauna of this region. If you want to explore the fascinating lowland forests and the rich ecosystem, this is the perfect place.

In 2003, the protected area was extended by 84.80 km², so you can now experience the impressive area of 251.14 km². The park’s location, between 150 and 50 meters above sea level, offers breathtaking views of the canyon cliffs and the majestic Alazani floodplains and forests. The dry climate and diverse landscape create a special atmosphere that will enchant you.

Flora and Fauna

The flora and fauna of Vashlovani-National-Park is not only diverse, but also unique. You will discover pistachio trees, peonies and orchids, some of which are endemic. The park is home to 25 species of reptiles, including impressive species such as the Macrovipera lebetina and the Eryx jaculus.
Over 100 species of birds live here, including the imperial eagle, the black vulture, the pheasant and the rare black stork. 46 species of mammal live in the forests and fjords, including the golden jackal, the red fox, the wolf and the Eurasian lynx. With a little luck, you can even spot the tracks of the Caucasian leopard, which was sighted in the park area in 2003. The unique landscapes and wildlife make the place an interesting destination for photo tours.

Tourism

The park is one of the most popular destinations in Georgia. Those who want to visit the park should be prepared for two different routes by 4×4. The first route is via the Davidgareja steppe to the Dali Dam and takes about three hours; the second route is via Dedoplistskaro and also takes about three hours.

Vashlovani-National-Park is a popular destination for tourists who want to experience the diversity of nature up close. In particular, nature lovers and photographers like to come here to photograph animals, birds and breathtaking landscapes. The park is also a paradise for horse riders and adventurers who want to explore the vastness of the Georgian steppe. You can take part in longer tours that also include the Gareja semi-desert in Kakheti, or take shorter tours in the park and stay overnight in tents or huts.

For a special experience, jeep and off-road tours are available, which lead to two-day excursions into the fascinating Davit Gareja steppe. The park’s main attractions include:

practical tips

A fee is charged for visiting the park. The entrance fee can be paid at the visitor centre in Dedopliszkaro. It is advisable to register at the visitor centre before the visit to obtain the necessary permits, as the park is located on the border with Azerbaijan and some areas are controlled by the border police. The best time to travel is from December to the end of May and from October to November, as it can get too hot in summer.
