Tusheti

The beautiful mountainous region of Tusheti in eastern Georgia is a wonderful place to explore, ideally in a 4×4. The world-famous Abano Pass (3000m) on the way to Tusheti is a real magnet for those seeking adventure. Many visitors travel to Georgia just for this exciting experience.

The route over the pass is challenging, which is why we strongly recommend that you hire an experienced driver who is very familiar with the area.

Tusheti itself consists of four different valleys with charming villages and settlements, such as Omalo, Dartlo, Diklo Schenako, etc., which can also only be reached by off-road vehicle. Therefore, it is essential to take a jeep tour to Tusheti.

Steppes in Kakheti

The scenic steppes of Kakheti contain some of the country’s most beautiful natural treasures, including the stunning Vashlovani National Park, the Tashachuna Reserve and the idyllic setting of the historic Davit Gareja Monastery.

This region, located in the far east of Georgia, is one of the driest areas in the country and is particularly appealing to off-road drivers.

We recommend that you choose this region if you want to enjoy the steppe-like climate and landscape. It is best to visit this beautiful region in spring or autumn. In the summer months, temperatures can rise above 40 degrees.

The unique flora and fauna of Vashlovani National Park and the impressive cultural monuments in the Garedja steppes are particular highlights to discover on a jeep tour in Georgia in these regions.

Svaneti

The mountain region of Svaneti is a truly fascinating travel destination in Georgia that you should definitely visit. If you want to explore the region fully, we recommend taking a round trip that includes both Lower and Upper Svaneti. In this way you won’t be able to miss the breathtaking Lasdili Pass route (2600 m).

Although the round trip is passable with a normal car, we recommend that you switch to a 4×4 for a trip to Svaneti. This way, you can discover the hidden treasures of the region at your own pace and in comfort.

If you want to discover beautiful mountains and mountain paths away from the well-known chapels, towers and other cultural monuments, a jeep tour to Svaneti is perfect for you. The breathtaking mountains such as Goldaschi, Labrakhi or the beautiful Koruldi Lakes are only accessible by jeep.

Mountain passes in Georgia

• Tskhratskaro

The Tskhratskaro Pass (2055 m) connects two enchanting areas of Georgia – Bakuriani and Tsalka. If we can give you a little tip, we would recommend starting the route from Tsalka and driving to Bakuriani. The landscape, which belongs to the mountains of the Lesser Caucasus, is unique and enchanting.

Along the way, you will come across some beautiful old chapels and meet some lovely shepherd families. On the way there is also the beautiful village of Tabatskuri on Lake Tabatskuri, which you should definitely visit. This stunning lake is a real paradise for anyone who wants to enjoy bird watching and marvel at the diversity of the species.

We would like to point out that you should take particular care when travelling in the area, as there are many flocks of sheep here. The sheepdogs are very loyal companions and will defend their flocks with great zeal. We kindly ask you to stay away from the flocks and not to get out near them.

Please note that this route passes close to a protected gas pipe. Remember to take your ID or passport with you, as this will be required at the checkpoints.

• Zekari

The Zekari Pass is located in the magnificent mountains of the Lesser Caucasus and forms a natural border between southern and western Georgia. The route starts in Abastumani, a beautiful resort town, and ends in Bagdati, a small, idyllic village near Kutaisi.

The road is unpaved and leads up to an altitude of 2,200 metres. The view from here is truly remarkable. From the vantage point at the pass, called Kvasakdara, you can see the entire impressive chain of the Greater Caucasus on a clear day. This wonderful experience, especially at sunset, will remain unforgettable in your memory.

Along the way, we suggest you try the famous mineral water in the resort of Seirme and enjoy the beautiful surrounding landscape.

Goderdzi

The Goderdzi Pass in Ajara is a real treasure, a place of impressive beauty that you should definitely visit. This pass, which is over 2000 metres above sea level, connects the Ajara region with Samtskhe-Javakheti and extends from Batumi to Adigeni.

If you want to experience the true daily life and hospitality of the Georgian people, then visit the people who live in the pass and its surroundings during the summer. These areas serve as summer pastures for the locals and entire families spend the entire summer here.

The simple yet beautiful architecture of the wooden huts, perfectly integrated into the surrounding landscape, delights visitors from a range of backgrounds, from photographers and hikers to culture lovers and cyclists.

The highlights of Goderdzi Pass are the beautiful lakes, the lovely resort of Beschumi and the fascinating petrified forest.

• Lasdili and Latpari

The Latpari and Lasdili passes in the Svaneti mountain range between Lower and Upper Svaneti are particular highlights of this region.

The Lasdili Pass sits impressively where the valley of the Tskhenistskali River (or Lachkhuri, as it is called by the Swans) ends at the foot of the majestic Greater Caucasus and the imposing Ailama Glacier. This impressive pass, at an altitude of 2600 metres, is the best route between Lentekhi and the pretty village of Ushguli. The road is really well built, so it is also passable with a small car.

If you want to enjoy the sweeping panorama of Svaneti, the drive over the Latpari Pass is definitely worth it. At an altitude of 2800 metres, this pass connects the villages of Chvelpi and Kala in Lower and Upper Svaneti. From there, you can enjoy views of the Caucasian mountains, gorges and villages that will stay with you for a long time to come.

Please note that the road conditions are challenging and a 4×4 vehicle is required. Therefore, we recommend that you be accompanied by a local driver. We would like to point out that the route is NOT suitable for self-drivers.

Please note that both passes are closed during winter and are only passable from summer to autumn. We recommend the best travel time for the Lasdili Pass from mid-June to the end of October, while the Latpari Pass is best travelled from mid-July to the end of September.
