Uplistsikhe

Uplistsikhe is located in central Georgia, in the Inner Kartli region, about 10 kilometers east of Gori, picturesquely situated above the Mtkvari (Kura) River. The ancient cave city is easily accessible and is located on one of the historic trade routes between East and West.

Uplistsikhe is one of Georgia’s oldest urban settlements, dating back to the 1st millennium BC. Carved into the rock, the city developed into an important political, religious, and economic center of the ancient kingdom of Kartli (Iberia).

The complex consisted of several hundred caves, including pagan temples, living quarters, storage rooms, wine cellars (marani), and a theater. Uplistsikhe was particularly important as a religious center before the Christianization of Georgia in the 4th century.

With the introduction of Christianity, the city gradually lost its importance as many pagan places of worship were abandoned. Nevertheless, Uplistsikhe remained inhabited for centuries. In the 13th century, the rock-hewn city was severely damaged by Mongol invasions and eventually abandoned.

Today, Uplistsikhe is an important archaeological monument that offers a unique insight into the early history and culture of Georgia.
