Best times for trekking in Georgia

When is the best time to hike in Georgia – many guests who are visiting the country for the first time and would like to take part in a guided hiking tour in Georgia or hike in Georgia on their own ask themselves. One clear answer is that the best time to go hiking in Georgia is from mid-June to the end of October.

But there are a few subtleties you should know to make your hiking trip in Georgia enjoyable. Since most hiking in Georgia takes place in the mountainous regions, the best time to hike in Georgia depends largely on which region you visit and which routes you choose:

Best time to hike in Svaneti

The two hikes in Svaneti – Mestia-Ushgul and from Bestcho to Ushguli – can be undertaken from mid-June. However, our most popular hiking tour ,,Route from Lentekhi to Etserei” is only possible from mid-July.

Best time to hike in Tusheti

The hiking routes, such as trekking in Georgia ,,From Kazbegi to Tusheti” or ,,The Breath of the Caucasus”, where the routes lead over 3000 metres high, are only feasible between mid-July and the end of September, as the passes are only free of snow for hiking in July.

The best month to hike in Georgia

The choice of the exact hiking time depends on what kind of mountain experience you are looking for. We can divide this time into two periods:

1. from mid-June to mid-August

2. from mid-August to the end of September

Each of these periods has its advantages and disadvantages:

  • Mid-June to mid-August

Disadvantages: The weather is not yet stable and hikers can expect a few rainy days. The air is not one hundred per cent clear and the mountains can be hidden behind clouds.

Advantages: The mountain flowers are in full bloom and the mountain meadows are beautiful. This time is particularly suitable for flower lovers and photographers who want to capture beautiful mountain meadows.

  • Mid August to the end of September

Disadvantages: The mountain flowers stop blooming and the meadows lose their charm. It can get a little colder in the mountains above 2500 metres.

Advantages: The weather is more stable and the air is clear. This makes it easier to enjoy the views of the mountains and landscapes.

These characteristics apply to hikes above 2500 metres. Slightly lower routes, such as those in the Borjomi-Kharaguli National Park, can be walked from the beginning of June.
