Buses / Marshrutkas

Buses and marshrutkas are a very popular form of transport in Georgia. This means of transport in Georgia is very well connected and you can reach even the smallest village with these buses. Tickets can be bought directly at the railway station. There are no online platforms yet. You can only find out the exact departure times at the railway station.

Taxi

Private taxis or shared taxis run regularly between the larger cities. For example, Tbilisi – Kutaisi, Tbilisi – Batumi or Tbilisi – Telavi. Taxis are paid for in cash and you should have money with you. There is no timetable for taxis, they leave when they are full.

Metro in Tbilisi

With a total of 23 stations and two lines, the metro in Tbilisi is a fast and inexpensive means of transport and very popular with the locals. To use the metro in Tbilisi, you need a special card, the Metroman, which you can buy at any metro station. You have to top up a certain amount of credit on this card before you can travel. One journey costs one lari (in 2025).

The metro network in Tbilisi has a total length of 26.4 kilometres. It was put into operation on 11 January 1966 as the fourth metro system in the Soviet Union (after Moscow, Leningrad and Kiev). As with other Soviet metro systems, most of the stations are very deep underground and have a decorative design. A ride on the metro in Tbilisi is highly recommended.

Bus and minibus

Another means of transport in Tbilisi are buses or minibuses. To use this mode of transport, you should know exactly which bus number goes in which direction. But don’t worry! There are electric signs at every bus stop that tell you which bus goes in which direction in Latin letters. Here you can also pay with your Metroman card.

Taxi

Taking a taxi in Tbilisi and Georgia in general is not as expensive as in European countries. There are taxi drivers who you can speak to directly on the street. Taxis in Georgia do not have taximeters, so you should agree the price before the journey. If you don’t want to do this, there is an alternative: some taxi companies offer their service via a special app. You enter the correct details and the taxi arrives. In this case, you will be told the fare and can pay by card or cash.
