History & Architecture

History

The origins of the castle go back to the 9th century, when it was called ‘Lomsia’. It originally served as a strategic defensive structure and was rebuilt in the 12th century by Baschken II. Jakeli. At that time, the city was given the name Akhaltsikhe (new castle) and quickly developed into an important trade and cultural centre in the Samtskhe region.

In its heyday, Akhaltsikhe was not only a military centre but also a cultural one. From the Ottoman conquest in 1578 to the Russian wars in the 19th century, the castle played a crucial role in the region’s geopolitical upheavals. The various rulers have left their mark, which can be discovered on a tour of the castle.

Architecture

The architecture of the castle is extraordinary and varied. Since the castle was conquered by the Ottomans in the 16th century and ruled until the 19th century, the architecture is also influenced by the Ottoman style.

An important highlight is the mosque, madrasa and minaret named after Haji Ahmed-Pasha Jakeli. The Jakeli Palace, which now houses the exhibition hall of the Samtskhe-Javakheti History Museum, also offers fascinating insights into the culture and heritage of the region.
