Svetitskhoveli Cathedral

Location

Svetitskhoveli Cathedral is located in Mtskheta, the ancient capital of Georgia, at the confluence of the Kura (Mtkvari) and Aragvi rivers. Only 20 kilometers from Tbilisi, it is one of the most visited destinations in the country.

Mtskheta ein Blick auf der Stadt

Historical overview

The cathedral was built in the 11th century (1010–1029) by King Giorgi I under the direction of the architect Arsukidze and stands on the site where, according to tradition, Christ’s robe is buried—a symbol of special holiness. For centuries, Svetitskhoveli was:

the most important cathedral in Georgia
the site of royal coronations
the burial place of royal dynasties
Here, kings received their blessings, important state decisions were made, and prayers were said for the fate of the country. Despite wars and invasions, the cathedral stands to this day as a symbol of faith and unity.

Architecture

Svetitskhoveli is a masterpiece of medieval Georgian architecture in the cross-domed style. The tall, harmonious domes, massive stone walls, ornate facade decorations, and symbolic reliefs create a sublime spatial experience. Particularly noteworthy is the relief of the hand of the architect Arsukidze, a greeting from the past. The light inside enhances the atmosphere of silence and prayer.

Frescoes

The frescoes date from the 11th to 17th centuries and depict scenes from the life of Jesus, saints, and biblical stories. Their restrained color palette and tranquil expressiveness convey inner peace and spirituality.

Particularly fascinating and unique is the fresco on the right façade, which depicts Jesus surrounded by saints, angels, and the signs of the zodiac—an extraordinary interplay of spirituality and symbolism.
